I’m stuck.
My friends are playing the Nintendo Wii and they refuse to let me join until I got my blog post done. I know this means that they truly care about me, but at this moment it feels like they love seeing me suffer. I’ve literally been staring at a blank screen for the last two hours not knowing what to write about.
All of a sudden it hit me: I should blog about the Wii.
It makes sense. The Wii is my favorite current-generation console. Not only was it the first successful motion-sensing video game system, you can download selected titles from the NES to the N64 due to Wi-Fi capabilities. It’s a combination of Nintendo’s nostalgic masterpieces and futuristic wonders all wrapped up in a rectangular prism of pure happiness.
Although the most notable aspect of the Wii is its unique style of gameplay, my favorite games on it are those that don’t take advantage of its motion-sensing capabilities. If you are a proud/prospective owner of a Nintendo Wii, play close attention. I’m going to give you suggestions that are worth countless hours of entertainment.
Mario and company are back in a classic adventure that is very reminiscent of the Golden Age of the side-scroller. The story is still as brilliant as ever: the princess gets kidnapped by Bowser and everybody’s favorite mustached plumber must bravely fight his way through several castles to rescue her so that she could get kidnapped again in the next game.
A masterpiece? Naturally! But there’s more…
The feature that sets this game apart from its ancestors is the multiplayer mode. Up to four players can play simultaneously! Instead of navigating through levels by your lonesome, you can have your friends either help you or make the game more difficult by purposefully knocking each other off cliffs or into lava. Either way, “the more, the merrier” certainly applies to the world of Mario.
Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy have returned in a new adventure! This time, their beloved banana hoard has been plundered by the Tiki Tak Tribe.
To veteran gamers, this game will remind you of the original Donkey Kong Country series for the SNES. This side-scroller plays similarly to Mario with its own distinct twists. Just like in Mario, my favorite part about this game is the simultaneous multiplayer gameplay. However, there is a difference: it is strictly a two-player game. Of course, this doesn’t take away from its fun-factor.
In short, this game is a barrel of monkeys.
Like anybody who knows what he’s doing, I have saved the best for last. Of the games I’ve discussed so far, this is the one that I’ve logged the most hours into. Unlike the above, this game is a part of the fighter genre.
It is the fighter to end all fighters.
To begin, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB) is the 3rd game of its series. Up to four players can choose from 35 playable characters that consist of well-known Nintendo mascots from Mario to Pikachu. There is a universal control scheme that allows players to focus more on technique than complex button combinations.
Unlike typical fighters, players don’t have a health bar, but rather a percentage. The higher the percentage, the easier it is to knock someone off the stage that results in a lost life. Because of this, matches can vary greatly in length and add spontaneity, a feature that is uncommon in this genre.
In addition to being a fighter, there is also an in-depth adventure mode that is a side-scroller/fighter hybrid. For those who don’t have siblings or easily available friends to play with, this is a great option. You can even play against others online.
Overall, if you’re looking for the game that can provide you with a never-ending amount of play time, look no further. SSBB is a Wii staple that gives you everything that you will ever need for a perfect video game experience.
With a finished blog post comes a happy blogger that gets to take his past frustrations out on his friends in some good ol’ SSBB.
